How to get a domain for under $12 a year (and dodge the renewal traps)
A domain — your website's address — is the one part that genuinely costs money. But it should be about $10 a year, not $40. Here's how to buy cheap and avoid the tricks registrars use to quietly inflate the bill.

Short answer: buy a plain .com from an at-cost registrar (Cloudflare Registrar sells them near wholesale, ~$10/yr with no markup), turn on auto-renew, turn off the paid add-ons, and check the renewal price — not just the first-year "sale" price.
Why domains "cost" wildly different amounts
The actual wholesale cost of a typical .com is fixed and low. Everything above that is registrar markup, upsells, and teaser pricing. That's why the same domain can be $8 at one company and $40 at another. Once you know what's real, you stop overpaying.
The renewal trap (the big one)
The classic trick: a domain is advertised at $0.99 or $2.99 for the first year, then renews at $18–$22 every year after. The first year is bait. Always look at the renewal price — that's what you'll actually pay long-term. A registrar that charges a flat ~$10 every year, including renewals, is usually the better deal even if year one isn't the cheapest.
The add-on trap
At checkout you'll often see pre-ticked extras:
1WHOIS / domain privacy — hides your personal info from public lookup. Good to have, but it should be free (Cloudflare and several others include it). Don't pay extra for it.
2"Premium DNS," SSL certificates, email hosting, site builders — you usually don't need these to start. Free HTTPS comes with Cloudflare/most hosts automatically. Uncheck them.
3Long pre-paid terms — fine if you're sure, but not required. One year is a safe start.
